How to get your plumbing business recommended by ChatGPT

A homeowner standing in an inch of water doesn't want ten links. More of them now type the problem into ChatGPT or Google and take the two or three plumbers the answer names. Here is how to be one of those names.

An AI chat answer naming a local plumber as the top pick for a water heater replacement

ChatGPT and other AI tools name a plumber when they can find clear, matching facts about it: what jobs it does, which towns it covers, whether it takes emergency calls, and what other sites and reviewers say. You can't buy a spot. You can make those facts easy to find, and that is most of the work.

What homeowners ask AI about plumbing

Plumbing questions to AI tools tend to be long and specific, because people describe the mess in front of them. Most fall into three kinds:

  • Emergency: "Water is coming through my kitchen ceiling, who can come tonight in Broken Arrow?"
  • Cost: "How much does it cost to replace a 50-gallon gas water heater in Tulsa, and who does it?"
  • Choice: "Tankless or tank water heater for a family of five, and which local plumber installs Rinnai?"

Each one gives the AI a job (emergency repair, replacement, install), a place and sometimes a brand. If your website states those three things plainly, you match. If it says "full-service plumbing solutions", you don't.

1. Make sure AI crawlers can read your site

Start here, because nothing else counts if the tools are locked out. Some website hosts and security plugins block OpenAI's and Perplexity's crawlers by default. Check your robots.txt file and any firewall settings; our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt lists the names to allow. A phone number or price list saved as an image is also invisible to them, so put it in real text.

2. Give every plumbing job its own page

A single "Services" page that lists drain cleaning, water heaters, repiping and sewer lines gives an AI tool nothing specific to quote. Separate pages do. Each one should say, in the first two sentences, what the job is, which towns you do it in, and whether it's available after hours. Our guide to service pages that rank has the full layout.

The pages plumbers most often miss: emergency plumbing, water heater replacement (tank and tankless), sewer line repair, slab leak detection and repiping. These are the high-value jobs people ask AI about.

3. State your prices as ranges

"How much does it cost" is one of the most common plumbing prompts. When your page says something like "Most 40 to 50-gallon gas water heater replacements we do in Tulsa run $1,800 to $2,900 installed, depending on venting and code updates", an AI answer can quote you and name you in the same breath. Use your real numbers, not an industry average. If you won't publish prices, publish your diagnostic or trip fee and what changes the final cost.

4. Say plainly that you take emergency calls

If you answer at 2am, the words "24/7 emergency plumber" need to appear in text on your site, in your Google Business Profile hours and in your schema. AI tools can't infer it from a red phone icon. If you don't take night calls, say what your hours are; it keeps you out of answers where you'd lose the job anyway.

5. Add schema with your real details

Structured data (schema) is code that tells machines your business type, service area, hours and services without them having to guess. For a plumber that means a Plumber type (a kind of LocalBusiness), the towns in areaServed, opening hours that include emergency hours, and a list of services. Keep it identical to what the page says.

6. Match your details on Google, Bing, Apple and Yelp

ChatGPT's web search has relied heavily on Bing, so a missing or stale Bing Places listing can cost you even if Google looks perfect. Check that your business name, phone and service area read the same on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Angi and the BBB. A different phone number on one of them is enough to make a tool less sure you're the same business.

7. Get mentioned where plumbers get vetted

AI answers lean on sources other than your own site. For plumbers the useful ones are review sites, local news (a burst-pipe story in winter is a chance), your local PHCC chapter if you're a member, and manufacturer installer pages if you're listed (for example, as a certified installer for the water heater brands you fit). Each listing that repeats your name, town and specialty makes the next AI answer a little more sure about you.

8. Ask for reviews that name the job and the town

"Great service!" helps your star rating. "Fixed our slab leak in Jenks the same day" helps your star rating and tells every AI tool what you do and where. When you ask for a review, ask the customer to mention what you fixed. Don't script it word for word.

How to check whether it's working

Pick ten prompts a real customer of yours would type, like the three above with your towns in them. Run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google once a month and write down who gets named. The answers move around from run to run, so look at the trend over three months, not one result.

Common questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

You can't pay to be recommended by ChatGPT, because ChatGPT does not sell placement in its answers. Any service that promises a guaranteed ChatGPT recommendation for a plumbing company is overselling. What you can control is how clear and consistent your information is across the web.

How long does it take for ChatGPT to start mentioning my plumbing company?

There is no fixed timeline. Changes to your site can be picked up within weeks once crawlers revisit, but listings and reviews build up over months. Track the same prompts monthly and expect gradual movement.

Does my Google Business Profile affect ChatGPT answers?

Indirectly. Google AI Overviews draw on Google's own data, including Business Profiles. ChatGPT draws more on Bing and the open web, so you need both your Google profile and your Bing Places listing complete and matching.

Do I need a separate page for each town I serve?

Only for towns where you really want work and can say something specific, such as typical jobs, response times or local rules. Thin copy-and-paste town pages don't help with Google or AI tools.
