No one can pay or force ChatGPT to name you. What you can do is make your business easy to find, read and trust: let AI crawlers in, state your services, area and license plainly, add structured data, collect reviews and get mentioned on other sites. Then test with real customer questions.
How AI tools pick which businesses to name
AI assistants answer by reading pages from search indexes and crawlers, then writing a short reply. They can only name businesses they can find and understand. In practice that favors sites that are crawlable, state facts clearly, show who is behind them and are echoed by other sources such as reviews, directories and local mentions. These tools change often, so treat this as a direction, not a formula.
Seven steps for a contractor
- Check that AI crawlers aren't blocked. Some hosting settings block them by default. Our robots.txt guide shows the check and the fix.
- Give each service its own page. "Water heater replacement" or "panel upgrade" with price factors, process and the towns you serve. See service pages that rank.
- State the facts in plain sentences. Who you are, what you do, where you work, hours, license number, how to contact you. AI tools quote sentences, not slogans.
- Add structured data. LocalBusiness (or Plumber, Electrician, HVACBusiness) plus Service and FAQ markup spell the facts out for machines.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete. It is one of the most consistent sources about local businesses. Use our 12-point checklist.
- Earn reviews and mentions. Reviews, local directories, chambers of commerce, supplier and manufacturer dealer pages and local news all repeat your business details. Keep the name, address and phone identical.
- Add a Bing Webmaster account. Submit your sitemap. Some AI search features rely on Bing's index, so being visible there matters.
How to test where you stand
Write down 10 questions a customer would ask, such as "best electrician in [your town]" or "how much does a panel upgrade cost in [your state]". Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI answers. Note whether you appear and which sources are cited. Repeat monthly. Don't expect to appear straight away.
What not to do
- Don't pay anyone who guarantees a ChatGPT ranking. There is no such thing.
- Don't stuff pages with keywords or paste the same text on every town page. It can hurt you in Google and gives AI tools nothing useful.
- Don't buy fake reviews. Platforms remove them and it damages trust.
Common questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
You can't pay ChatGPT to recommend your business; there is no paid placement for local businesses in its answers. Be wary of anyone who says otherwise.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Appearing in AI answers can take weeks or months and can't be promised. Fixing crawl access and clear pages can help within weeks, but building mentions and reviews is a months-long job.
Do I need a blog to be named by AI?
A blog isn't the first thing you need to be named by AI. Service pages, a complete Business Profile and reviews matter more. Helpful guides can add to it once the basics are done.
